125 years of Lee

There aren’t too many labels who can say they’re 125 years old, well Lee can. Yep the brand who brought you the riders and workwear fashion celebrates 125 years on top.

For 125 years, Lee has been dressing the cowboys, the workers, the thrillseekers, the farmer, the party-goers and those who take risks and also, me! From small beginnings in 1889 through to Lee’s developments of the Union All in 1913, the Zip Fly Jean in 1926 and their Iconic Denim Jacket in 1931, Lee has always been driven by authenticity, innovation, premium fabrications and fit. It’s these milestones and the desirability created by Hollywood icons Marilyn Monroe and James Dean which propelled Lee into denim folklore.

I still remember those Lee jeans on James Dean, they fit like a glove (as all good jeans should). He epitomised the brand and gave it not only street cred but a sense of “stuff the system” swagger. I’ve never quite been able to pull of the James Dean vibe, I’m just too bubbly a person. However, as we’re on the topic of reminiscing, I remember my first pair of Lee jeans, the Rider jeans, purchased with my own money from my first job scooping ice cream at Baskin Robbins in Noosa when I was 15. I barely took those jeans off! These days their cut still remains one of my faves and the label has evolved to reach a new generation of fans who may not know of the nostalgia but feel as passionate for the brand as the fans of yonder years.

Recently, I caught up with Lee Brand Manager, Sarah Plater to find out what makes her tick and what’s ahead for the iconic brand.
