Beresford Sundays: Beer, Beats, BBQ

If you’re a local Sydneysider then I’m sure you’ve heard about Beresford Sundays; when the night time dwellers start a little earlier in the day instead of waiting till night fall before they come out and play.

It’s a concept adopted by the Merivale group, beginning around lunchtime on a Sunday at The Beresford Hotel and dragging well into the evening.   If you are craving a feast after a big Saturday night out then the big BBQ is the meal for you. For $25 you get a giant man-size plate of goodness, with a mixture of cuisines and delicacies from around the globe!

NathanSullivanThis week, Livvy May aka me, myself and I sat down with the effervescent and Queen of style (check out the jacket #divine), Mr Nathan Sullivan who in fact created the concept we’ve all come to know and love as ‘Beresford Sundays’!

Q: What gave you the idea to start Beresford Sundays?

A: I’ve worked with Justin Hemmes for seven years (I played a big part in the launch of Pool Club) and when he took over The Beresford three years ago I swooped into the venue. There weren’t many gay parties in Sydney vibing on a social aspect – a party where you can mingle, meet new friends and enjoy a beer, so the concept was born. We don’t always need discos and glitter!

Q: How long has it been running for?

A: We just had our official 2nd Birthday – ‘Beresford Sunday’s Terrible Two’s’!

Q: Did you feel there was a lack of Sunday fun in Sydney at the time?

A: It was a lack of variety. The Beresford is a great venue for a start; the courtyard is beautiful (The Oxford St Strip doesn’t have anything else like it). Then there’s upstairs where, later in the night, if you’re feeling it, you can follow through with a bit of a dance. Your Sunday can be tame or troublesome – you decide.

Nathan BeresfordQ: Describe your typical Sunday?

A: Every week I engage with different members of the community, we arrive for a lunch in the courtyard and graze with a bottle of bubbles. Then from 5pm till midnight it’s chaos for me; working the crowd, catching up with the regulars, bumping in DJ’s and somewhere in there I try and do the worm (the ultimate 80’s dance move)!

Q: What can patrons expect from a Sunday at Beresford?

A: It’s exactly what you want your Sunday to be. We provide the best of every element; food, music, drinks, a sun kissed courtyard – then you can choose exactly where you want to take it.

Q: Fave dish on the menu?

A: I usually order the Grilled chicken breast with shredded cabbage, green shallots, parmesan and romesco.

Q: Fave cocktail at Beresford?

A: I start every Beresford Sunday with a Bloody Mary.  Ryan Bresler (Venue Manager) makes the best ones!

Q: Fave tune they regularly spin on a Sunday?

A: God bless our DJs, they know how to romance the crowd. From Janet Jackson to Robin Thicke, you never know what to expect – but for me that’s what I love about it.

In terms of outfit, I (Livvy May) opted for simple ‘spring’ style. Skirt with pockets (love that), simple tee, acid wash jacket, neutral wedges to tie it all together and accessorised to the nines with a statement necklace and colourful shades.

Beresford Sundays is one of the best places to venture to for a perfect Sunday session. Enjoy drinks, DJs and good times in the beautiful courtyard then take the journey upstairs to enjoy bumping and grinding on the D floor, hopefully well into the night.

See you there on Sunday… X x
