Finding your beauty inspiration

I imagine you’ve heard the saying; beauty is in the eye of the beholder. Well, I believe this to be true. Different people have different ideas about what is beautiful. I thought I would share some of mine and a snippet of my summer beauty essentials.

My beauty inspiration comes from many places but none more significant than my grandmother (Ma), Peggy – an eternal beauty in my eyes both inside and out. At 76 years of age, she exudes youth both in her appearance and her positive approach to life. I remember sitting in her en suite with her at a young age and watching her apply creams to her face in the most delicate manner – starting from the bottom of the neck and moving upwards. On nights when I slept over, she would sit in front of the television, filing her nails, painting them (always in a neutral shade as colours clashed with her vibrant red hair) and rubbing copious amounts of deliciously smelling hand cream on my tiny hands as to teach me her routine. It worked – I apply hand cream every night before I go to bed and when I do I think of my Ma! To be described as ageing like a fine wine is a compliment she hears far too often, however, I’m sure never tires of and it’s one I hope to hear as I get older. Beauty is genetic, right? I hope so….

So what about me and my approach to beauty? I would never have said, beauty was my thing – fashion is my thing. I would rather spend my hard earned cash on clothes as opposed to face creams but when I find a pearler of a product, I most certainly am a brand loyalist. I tend to have different products for different seasons so for summer I opt for bright colours on lips and nails, a quality skin primer so your makeup stays put in the sultry heat, blush to accentuate your feminine features and most importantly a fabulous tanning product. To achieve a flawless face, you need a top notch primer and I’m yet to find one that beats ModelCo Cosmetics Face Base Skin Primer – a clear, light formula, best to apply after cleansing but before makeup to ensure perfect coverage and long wear. Then apply foundation as per normal. I usually opt for a slightly darker shade during the summer months as my skin tone darkens from sun exposure. Now to accentuate the face you need great blush to define the cheekbones and MAC’s Pink Swoon is the perfect hue for my fair skin.

Those who know me well, are aware of my love of colour – no more so than when the weather is hot. Pinks, oranges and reds all come out to play on both my lips and my nails and I have found some special finds this season. ModelCo have a fabulous range of Party Proof Lipstick that I guarantee last all night (I should know based on my dancing efforts last Friday which finished in the wee hours of Saturday morning). They also come equipped with mirrors on the case so you can touch up at any point during the day or night without having to excuse yourself to use the powder room. If you’re a little less bold with your style and often opt for all black like a true fashionista then a bright hue on your nails is the perfect way to incorporate colour in your summer wardrobe. This coral shade from Australis is on rotation for me all year round and is my go to colour when I’m feeling indecisive.

What about the most important element of the season, hitting the beach! You need to be buffed and bronzed and there’s no better product out there than ModelCo to achieve a natural sun-kissed look. I have been using their Tan Mousse and Tan Airbrush in a Can for almost ten years. The mousse is perfect for a light sheen but for something a little heavier and to last a little longer the original tan in a can is the best on the market. I remember as a teenager growing up in Noosa there was only one pharmacy that stocked ModelCo and I just about cleaned them out whenever they got a new shipment in. Best tips before application is to thoroughly exfoliate and dry the body of any excess moisture and when applying the product always use the Blend Buffing Mitt for an even, streak-free shine.

In my first job as a full time journalist I was lucky enough to make a gorgeous friend in Tracey Johnson. She is an exceptional photographer and graphic designer and I knew she was the only choice to capture my face on film and make me feel beautiful! We all know beauty comes from within and when you surround yourself with positive people who are doing exceptionally well in their creative fields you bring out the best in one another. Tracey can shoot almost anything, from pets, to weddings and well even me. Check out her site, she’s one in a million.

So to finish up why not leave you with a challenge to find the beauty within today. Think of something in your life you are blessed for and let your inner beauty shine. For me, that’s Ma and even though I don’t see her all that often as she lives in Noosa, she’s always on my mind, in my heart and there at night whenever I whip the hand cream out before bed.

Let me know what your summer essentials are so we can all be feeling and looking our most fabulous selves and age like fine wines just like my Ma, Peggy!
