Stylists, they are invited to the most galmourous parties, dress beautiful people and get first dibs on all the latest fashions. Think that’s what it’s really like?I sat down with Brisbane based fashion stylist and latest Westfield Carindale Styling recruit, Annabel Falco to find out the ins and outs of being a style superstar and just how much hard work is involved in such a creative line of work.
Q: Your must have essentials for every wardrobe?
A: My wardrobe revolves around a black blazer, skinny jeans, basic tees and a statement heel of some sort (usually leopard print). Without these items I wouldn’t be able to dress myself each morning!
Q: Your style icons?
A: Christine Centenera (Vogue Fashion Editor) for her ability to coordinate simple pieces to make a bold and unexpected statement.
Q: Is there a particular style or trend you love for Winter?
A: I’ve heavily (and heartily) invested in the drop-crotch pant trend this winter as well as the white-on-white-on-white look.
Q: Favourite place to shop?
A: Depends on my mood and budget but I always manage to find something at Sass & Bide, Cotton On, Cameo the Label or Camilla & Marc.
Q: Favourite local spot? (This is Livvy May after all so we must discuss food)
A: If my tastebuds had their way I would start my day with smashed avo on sourdough and a cold press coffee at Puk Espresso, Kangaroo Point; followed by sushi and sake at Ginga; topped off with dinner at my favourite Italian restaurant, Dell’Ugo’s on Brunswick Street. Their truffle mushrooms are out of this world.
Q: How would you describe your own personal style?
A: Layered, polished and tonal with a dash of leopard print thrown in for good measure.
Q: Are you a summer or a winter girl?
A: Definitely Winter! I have so many jackets and scarves that are begging for me to move to Melbourne.
Q: A day in the life of you…
A: As a freelance stylist each day is so different to the next! I am either a) running around collecting fashion, accessories and shoes to prep for a shoot b) casting and fitting models c) sourcing locations and new designers d) meeting with new clients or e) on location for an online or editorial shoot.
Q: What inspired you to become a stylist?
A: Ever since I was a little girl I knew I wanted to work in fashion. I would spend all of my free time sketching clothes, producing mini fashion magazines or dressing my sisters up for mock shoots. I was never quite sure which area I wanted to pursue (designing, writing, public relations etc.) but after much interning I found styling to be the most rewarding, challenging and creatively stimulating.
Q: What are some of the brands you work with?
A: As the online stylist for Dissh I work with great Australian labels such as Talulah, Cameo the Label, Finders Keepers and Mink Pink. My personal styling service with Westfield allows me to style with a wide variety of fashions ranging from Target, Cotton On and Diva through to David Jones, Country Road, Mimco and many more. I am also the stylist for Adorne Jewellery so I have the pleasure of shooting their latest and greatest accessories each month.
Q: Where do you get your daily fashion fix/news from? News (print, online), fave bloggers etc.
A: As a qualified journalist, print will always hold a strong place in my heart where style bibles such as Vogue, Elle and Instyle are firm favourites. As trends come and go, so too do my favourite bloggers; I occasionally check in with heavy weights such as They All Hate Us, Oracle Fox, Gary Pepper Girl and Harper & Harley but I mostly find inspiration from random accounts or images on Pinterest and Instagram. There are some fashionable and eclectic individuals out there and I love that I can stalk them from my iPhone!
Q: What can we expect from Annabel (stylist superstar) in 2014?
A: Having recently joined the Westfield team, I will be putting a lot energy and focus into building a relationship with their brand and clientele. I am enjoying styling for online boutiques and will hopefully continue to learn and grow as much as I can within e-retail. On a personal note, I hope to produce some unique shoots of my own for submission to some of my favourite magazines. I miss working on large-scale magazine covers and fashion spreads where the sky is the limit in regards to fashion, location and themes.
Q: What would I find in your handbag right now?
A: Wallet, Louis Vuitton diary, my house keys, keys to my parents’ place, lifesaver lollies, tissues, lip balm, Dior lipstick, water bottle, bull dog clips and approximately 245 bobby pins.
Q: Where do you see yourself in the next five years?
A: I would love to branch into VIP, event and celebrity dressing and I wouldn’t mind using that journalism degree I have either… perhaps a fashion column somewhere!? As long as I am surrounded by beautiful clothes, shoes, bags and accessories I am happy.
